Abstract
A series of experiment was carried out in efforts to isolate the causative agent of Epidemic Haemorrhagic Fever in Korea from 1963 to 1966.
Blood (serum, plasma and blood clot suspension) and urine obtained from patients in acute phase of hemorrhagic fever in clinical diagnosis (2nd to 7th day of the illness) were used as inocula to cultured Cells.
The MS and PS cells (as established cell line) and primary cultures of CEF, HK, RIB, DK and HFK were included. Blind passages, direct plaque assay under agar overlay, and interference against chikungunya virus in CEF and against WEE virus in PS and HFK cells were applied as appropriate techniques.
In spite of intensive efforts, all of the attempts to isolate the agent were, so far, unsuccessful. However, an interference-like phenomenon was observed when urine or sera of acute phase was applied to CEF cells and challenged with chikungunya virus or to PS and HFK and challenged with WEE virus.
